The instant messaging app that everyone loves, because it cuts out the cost of sending text messages has been bought by the social media giant Facebook.
Expected to have cost Facebook around $16bn, this is the second time they have purchased another platform. In April of 2012 Facebook announced that they would be buying Instagram, although when they bought this they kept it a separate service and this is what they aim to do with WhatsApp.
The deal from Facebook to buy WhatsApp includes $4bn in cash and approximately $12bn-worth of Facebook shares. Plus an additional $3bn in stock to WhatsApp’s founders and employees at a later date.
Even though Facebook have bought the instant messaging service we will still continue to use it and I can imagine the millions (nearly billions) of users will as well.
Good luck for the future Facebook!
